Decentralised sewage sludge utilisation
Individual solutions for energy-autonomous drying and mono-incineration lay the foundation for more independence in sewage sludge utilisation.
Decentralised sewage sludge utilisation
Werkstätten heating-systems GmbH’s decentralised recycling concept is the logical consequence of the steadily increasing sludge disposal pressure and innovative incineration technology. A combination of drying and incinerating the sludge at its own site also allows smaller municipalities and wastewater associations to operate independently. Journeys and storage are saved in terms of environmental protection and cost reduction. Werkstätten heating-systems GmbH is closely connected to Werkstätten GmbH under the umbrella of the Werkstätten Group and complements our range of services with expertise and years of experience in the areas of combustion technology, biomass fuel sales and renewable energies. Our customers benefit from the synergies achieved.
Essential building blocks
- Drying of the dewatered sewage sludge to 85–90 %-TS, incl. exhaust air treatment
- Mono-combustion of the dried sewage sludge in the rotary kiln, incl. flue gas cleaning
- Planning and approval procedure

Fuel — sewage sludge and industrial sludge
Combustion in the rotary kiln
Slag-free, temperature-controlled combustion
Incineration ash
• Complete burnout
• Plant available phosphorus
• Ideal for P‑Recovery
Customised system solutions
Depending on location, interests and current requirements, the above modules can be combined as desired. From complete turnkey solutions, including operator models, to the supply of individual core components, such as a rotary kiln with flue gas cleaning, we stand by our customers.
Decentralised drying and incineration can be expanded in stages and in a modular fashion. Cascading 500 kW rotary boilers create redundancy and flexibility in terms of annual tonnes as popular scales that allow permits without public participation.
Special features
- Regional recycling on site reduces sewage sludge tourism and strengthens independence
- Energy self-sufficient and unmanned overall concept
- Modularly expandable via cascading
- Complete burnout of ashes due to controllability of the residence times
- Water-cooled, rotating combustion chamber prevents slagging of the ashes
- Incineration ash recyclable for P‑recovery
- Homogeneous combustion process despite fluctuating calorific values and ash content
- Complete oxidation of the flue gases in downstream afterburner chamber
- Small space requirement due to smart system size
